palmOne Introduces Zire 72 Colour Handheld, Featuring Built-in Digital Camera and Audio/Video Capture and Playback



Hong Kong, April 29, 2004 -- palmOne, Inc. (Nasdaq: PLMO), the world's leading maker of handheld computers, today announced the Zire™ 72 handheld, an affordable multimedia-capable handheld computer with a built-in digital camera and audio/video capture and playback ability for an estimated street price of HK$2,380.

The Zire 72 handheld, with a 1.2-megapixel built-in camera and MP3(1) player, includes what users need for work and play. In addition to capturing photos, the Zire 72 handheld is the first PDA from palmOne to enable video capture.(2) Users can watch video clips on a brilliant 320 x 320 colour screen and then email(3) the video to friends. The MP3 player allows users to carry the tunes they enjoy and listen in stereo.(4) The Zire 72 handheld includes DataViz® Documents To Go®, enabling users to create and edit Word- and Excel-compatible files in both Chinese and English. For SMS/MMS, it comes with palmOne Messages which supports both Chinese and English SMS/MMC. Core software from palmOne provides synchronization with Microsoft Outlook (Windows only). Both English and Chinese Palm Desktop software are included in the box for customers' choice of use. With the Zire 72 handheld, users can even share files, and get wireless email and Internet access with built-in Bluetooth® technology.(5)

The handheld comes with built-in CJKOS Chinese software and Penpower Chinese handwriting input system, enabling operations in English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese environment.

The Zire 72 handheld's built-in 1.2-megapixel camera allows users to shoot photos and video clips, and then share them with friends and co-workers. Users can immediately show them in person or download and send them via email from a computer.(6) Zire 72 handheld software provides users the ability to create entire albums of pictures and videos on their handhelds.

The new palmOne media software lets users drop photos into a new Agenda view, contact list, or into the launcher background. In four easy steps, users can input a friend's personal information, snap a photo and save it to their contact list.

The built-in camera's user-friendly design, featuring a lens on the back of the device and using the display as a viewfinder, includes a 1280 x 960 photo capture (2x digital zoom); 320 x 240 video capture with sound; special effects, such as sepia, black and white, and more; and a simple one-tap sync to desktop. The new palmOne media software supports common video and photo formats for capture and playback. After capturing the images, users can zoom into photos, manually sort them into albums in the internal memory or on an expansion card, and draw on the photo or add a brief text note. Play MP3s(1)

Zire 72 handheld customers can carry tunes with them wherever they go, and listen to them using the built-in speaker or a pair of stereo headphones.(4) Users can play MP3s while scheduling appointments, adding contacts or just enjoying a game of solitaire.

Be as organised as you want to be
The Zire 72 handheld now manages images and videos just as easily as schedules or contacts. The new palmOne media software delivers improved organization functionality, giving users more fields in Outlook and including a new Agenda view to stay ahead of day-to-day activities.

Use Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat formats
The Zire 72 handheld keeps the right business tools close at hand by letting users create and edit Word- and Excel-compatible documents, in both Chinese and English, with DataViz Documents To Go. Users also can open and view Adobe Acrobat files (English only).

Record voice memos
With the Zire 72 handheld's Voice Memo feature, users can capture inspiration when it strikes. After recording a thought, the user can save it and synchronise it to their desktop computer. Users can then email(3) the voice memo to colleagues and friends.

Keep Outlook up-to-date
Users can synchronise with Microsoft Outlook (Windows only) email, calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes.

Feel the freedom of wireless networking
With Bluetooth technology built-in, the Zire 72 handheld gives users the freedom of wireless. Using a compatible, Bluetooth technology-enabled phone as a modem, users can send and receive email or SMS/MMS, and connect to the web.(5) The Zire 72 handheld also can connect with other Bluetooth technology-enabled devices, including PCs, printers, GPS and access points. New palmOne Bluetooth software features quick access to the Bluetooth wizard for easy configuration.

Chinese System and Two-way Dictionary
The new Zire 72 handheld comes with built-in CJKOS Chinese software and PenPower handwriting system. The user-friendly software supports both Simplified and Traditional Chinese characters, as well as English language.

The iWord English-Chinese dictionary application, which supports two-way dictionary function for 30,000 words, is included in the Software Installation CD. Users can easily install the dictionary to the Zire 72 handheld to enhance their language skills whenever and wherever they go.
